EGG HARBOR CITY - Atlantic County Democrats Sunday chose Tim Alexander of Galloway Township as their party’s candidate to challenge Republican Jeff Van Drew in the District 2 Congressional race.
Alexander took the party nomination by just 6 votes over Bayly Winder of Mays Landing. Also running were Cape May Mayor Zack Mullock and Terri Reese.
All four candidates presented their platforms during the 51st annual Democratic Convention held at Renault Winery in Egg Harbor City.
More than 200 delegates voted during the ranked choice voting process. Alexander won after three rounds of ballot counting with 101 votes over Winder’s 95 votes. Mullock garnered 19 votes, while Reese had 2.
Alexander said he was humbled and grateful to obtain the committee’s support.
“This endorsement means a lot to me personally because it comes from people who know this county, care deeply about our communities, and understand what’s at stake in this election. I want to sincerely thank every committee member for placing their trust in me. I don’t take that lightly,” he posted on his Facebook page after the event. “I'm in this fight because I believe South Jersey deserves leadership that shows up, listens, and works hard for working families every single day.”
Other endorsed candidates ran unopposed for the Democratic ticket. They are Cory Booker for U.S. Senate, former Pleasantville Police Chief Sean Riggin for Atlantic County Sheriff, Lisa Bender for Atlantic County Clerk, Jonathan Marcellus and Kyle Gornick for Atlantic County Commissioners-at-large, and Richard Healey for Atlantic County Commissioner in District 3 covering Egg Harbor and Hamilton townships.
Also at the convention, the committee presented outgoing Chairman Michael Suleiman an award thanking him for his 10 years party leader.
