Longtime Atlantic County prosecutor sworn-in as Superior Court judge

  • Atlantic County

Atlantic County's newest Superior Court judge also is an active duty member of the U.S. Army Reserve.

John Flammer will be assigned to the Family Court under Judge Rodney Cunningham.

Flammer spent more than 21 years with the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office, including as a chief assistant prosecutor and, most recently, as chief counsel to the prosecutor.

"John will be the only active duty military member of the Atlantic County Judiciary," Sen. Vincent Polistina said after Flammer's unanimous approval from the Senate Judiciary Committee in December.

Flammer is Polistina's seventh successful nomination to the bench in four years.

The lieutenant colonel has used his military connections to benefit those with similar ties as they go through the justice system.

Flammer has served as the office’s designee for the Veterans Diversion Program, which offers rehabilitative alternatives to those who have served over prosecution in some criminal cases.

The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office issued congratulations to Flammer following his swearing-in.

"During his career, he handled some of the office’s most complex matters, including Special Victims cases and the supervision of Internal Affairs, Professional Standards and Official Corruption investigations," the statement read.

"We thank him for his outstanding service and congratulate him on this well-deserved honor," it continued. "The people of New Jersey will be well served by his integrity, compassion, and commitment to justice."
