The gifts are opened, the wrapping paper has been recycled, and the tree is dropping needles like crazy. This can only mean one thing: it's time to recycle your live Christmas tree.

Recycling your live Christmas tree pays off in three ways, Atlantic County Utilities Authority President Rick Dovey said in a release. Keeping it out of the landfill saves precious landfill space, recycling your tree is cheaper for your town than disposing of it as trash, and ACUA recycles live trees into mulch."

ACUA estimates that in 2018, more than 500 tons of trees were collected as yard waste and recycled.

Please follow these guidelines when recycling your tree:

  • Trees should be free of lights and decorations, including tinsel

  • Trees do not have to be bagged

  • Flocked trees are acceptable for collection and composting

If ACUA does not pick up yard waste in your area, please contact your town's Public Works Department. Trees can also be brought to ACUA for disposal.

Please follow the same guidelines as for curbside collection, removing tinsel, lights and decorations. Trees do not need to be bagged and flocked trees are accepted for composting.
