Ventnor clean up, shredding event honors Earth Day

  • Downbeach

VENTNOR -Volunteers took to Wellington Avenue and Ski Beach Saturday, April 27 to prevent litter from entering the neighboring waterways as part of Ventnor's Earth Day activities.

Approximately 30 volunteers removed 263 pounds of trash and 5 pounds of recycling during the cleanup. Litter found included plastic bags, balloons and bottles, which shed light on the challenges still posed by single-use plastics.

The cleanup was a group effort among the Ventnor Green Team, Sustainable Downbeach, Surfrider Foundation South Jersey Chapter, Atlantic County Utilities Authority and the City of Ventnor, and was funded partially through a Coastal Cart Grant awarded by the Recycling Partnership. The grant also awarded the city funding for new recycling carts that will be delivered in May. The sturdy, lidded carts are expected to assist with litter prevention.

The city also held a paper shredding and recycling event on S. Newport Avenue that featured reusable bag giveaways, recycling information, and ACUA's Touch-a-Truck and Supercan. The event generated 1,725 pounds of shredded material that will be recycled.
