New Jersey Organizing Project to host summertime gathering in Ventnor

  • Ventnor

NJOP is still helping Sandy victims recover.

VENTNOR Approaching the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Sandy, which devastated the Jersey shore, the New Jersey Organizing Project is still fighting to get families back into their homes.

A potluck gathering will be held at the Newport Avenue gazebo near the boardwalk 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24 to connect individuals with other impacted families and have some good food and old-fashioned family fun. Bring a cold dish or dessert. Those interested in participating can email [email protected] to avoid duplicate food offerings. A $10 contribution is suggested but no one will be turned away.

In addition to community members still struggling with displacement and rebuilding, South Jersey communities are also fighting sunny day flooding, sea level rise and battling health conditions brought on by Superstorm Sandy and flooding.

We were able to win foreclosure forbearance, rental assistance and the supplemental fund for Sandy survivors because our communities came together and fought for the solutions we need, organizer Alison Arne said in a release. The National Flood Insurance Program is up for reauthorization in September and without consumer protections our premiums will begin to double every four years. We will need to come together again to fight for a fair, affordable and accurate NFIP.
