Ventnor block party welcomes spring at the Jersey shore

  • Ventnor

VENTNOR - It was a glorious day for a big get-together. The Ventnor Business Association held its second annual Spring Block Party Saturday, and hundreds of people showed up to enjoy great food, vendors, entertainment and games.

Children's dance groups pirouetted  on the big stage, while at the other end of the three-block long party, local musicians played soft rock music.

In addition to numerous non-profit organizations offering information about their programs, the Ventnor City Police Department, Fire Department, Municipal Alliance and Farmers Market shared information vital to healthy living in Ventnor. Ventnor firefighters distributed CO and smoke detectors. Several groups distributed free reusable bags.

Of special interest was a demonstration by the NJ fire Sprinkler Advisory Board showing the benefits of having an indoor sprinkler system.

State Coordinator Frank Ellis started a fire in a waste basket set up inside a special fireproof trailer. As the fire spread to a curtain, the sprinkler inside reached 155 degrees and automatically set off a spray of water, which quickly doused the fire.

The advisory board advocates to include sprinklers in one- and two-unit residential buildings. Although they are not a requirement for New Jersey building codes, they could reduce fire insurance costs, Ellis said.

There were lots of good eats in the food truck alley, and many well-behaved pups, one of which was a 13-week-old Italian greyhound that attracted a lot of attention.
