Ventnor officially opens beach season

  • Ventnor

VENTNOR - u.s. Congressman Jeff Van Drew and Atlantic County Freeholder Chairwoman Amy Gatto joined Mayor Beth Holtzman and Commissioners Lance Landgraf and Tim Kriebel, and members of the Ventnor City Beach Patrol to officially open the beach season Saturday, May 25.

Using an oversized scissors to cut the ribbon, Holtzman welcomed visitors and residents to enjoy the city's lifeguard-protected beaches, and encouraged them to visit shops and restaurants.

"Welcome to season 2019," Holtzman said.

Van Drew presented the city with a proclamation from the U.S. House of Representatives welcoming visitors to the Jersey Shore and wishing them a safe and happy summer season.

Before the brief ceremony on the beach, Beach Patrol Chief Stan Bergman welcomed a crew of new lifeguards, giving them some last minute instructions, including not to forget to use sunscreen.

"The tops of your feet will get burned today," he said.

The weather offered a perfect start to the season, with brilliant sunshine, cool temperatures, but the water is very cold Bergman said - only 57 degrees.

"There won't be many people in the water today, just the little kids," he said.
