Ventnor Police institute crackdown on driving while intoxicated

  • Ventnor

VENTNOR - The Ventnor Police Department announced Friday it would be instituting DWI checkpoints in strategic locations this summer to prevent motorists from driving while intoxicated.

Police made the announcement on the department's Facebook page.

The checkpoint will be funded through the Drunk Driving Enforcement Fund, which is money collected by the municipal court when fines are levied against persons found guilty of driving while intoxicated. The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office is also providing monetary support.

Other Atlantic County law enforcement agencies, under the supervision of the Prosecutor's Office, will assist Ventnor Police in conducting the checkpoints, which will be set up in high visibility areas to give the impression of a greater risk of being detected if they drive after drinking.

Officers who have conducted the checkpoints in previous years have reported that more people are using designated drivers.

The checkpoints real success will be when no DWI arrests are made during the checkpoints, police said.
