Bunnies love marigolds, so don't plant them, green team chairman says.

LONGPORT In response to negative press about the rabbit infestation in the Downbeach area, the Sustainable Longport green team plans a Garden Lecture, 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 27 in Council Chambers at Longport Borough Hall, 2305 Atlantic Ave.
Sustainable Longport Chairman Tom Subranni and other professionals will speak about the different plants that are either rabbit resistant or rabbit proof.
We love our bunnies, we just don't like them eating our plants, Subranni said.
The secret to maintaining a beautiful garden and limiting the damage rabbits can do is not putting out poisons, Subranni said. He recommends planting flowers and plants the bunnies won't eat, such as portulaca, vinca, barbery and artichoke.
Some plants have developed toxicity as a mechanism to survive and the bunnies won't eat them, he said.
I've been gardening in Longport for 40 years. I know rabbits, he said. They don't like lavender and they don't like silvery or fuzzy leaves or thorny plants.
Subranni said bunnies love marigolds, "so don't plant them."
He said the green team decided to conduct the educational program after hearing about the recent rash of rabbit poisonings that have also killed some pets in the Downbeach area.
Attendees will receive a packet of information about rabbit resistant plants.
The talk is free, but registration is required. Call the Longport Public Library at 609-487-7403 to reserve a seat.
