Beth Israel holds Tashlich service on the beach

MARGATE - Families gathered at the Huntington Avenue beach Sept. 16 for a Rosh Hashanah family service followed by Tashlich, the casting away of sins.

Rabbi Michael L. Feshbach and Cantor Rhoda J. Harrison sounded the shofar, following the traditional pattern of calls for the holiday. Children had a chance to sound their own toy shofars and the whole group joined in song and prayer.

Parents place their hands on the heads of their children during the traditional blessing of the children.

The service continued at the water's edge as families threw pieces of bread into the waves. Tashlich is a custom of casting away one's sins during the High Holidays. Worshippers symbolically throw bread into a body of water, thus starting the New Year with a clean slate.
