VENTNOR What do you want to be when you grow up? Students at the Ventnor Educational Community Complex April 19 learned a bit about what the future might hold.

The students participated in Career Day, which saw adults from various professions share what it is like to work in the community, including doctors, lawyers, police and firefighters, electrical workers and members of the U.S. military. The presenters each brought real-world experiences to life, and students were able to ask important questions: Why did you choose your career? and What about you as a child made you want to be that when you grew up?

The questions were endless, and students got their answers from the more than 20 professionals who participated in the annual event.

Presenters included the school's Buildings and Grounds personnel, Ventnor City Police and Fire departments, Ventnor Beach Patrol and the Atlantic County Utilities Authority./Atlantic City Electric/presented a safety demonstration at a trailer at the rear of the school that sent waves of excitement through students and staff as they witnessed the power of electricity and how to stay safe.

Students were excited to explore the U.S. Coast Guard Atlantic City Air Station rescue helicopter that landed in the field behind the school. Middle school students heard presentations from an attorney, travel agent, physical therapist, nuclear medicine technologist. Presenters included Ventnor veterinarian Dr. Jessica Grant, orthopedic surgeon and school board member Dr. John Baker, and personnel from the Federal Aviation Administration and U.S. Forest Service.

Younger students enjoyed a vehicle-themed career day, titled, Careers and Their Vehicles. The students rotated through different stations and received eye-opening experiences for each career, discussing the skills and responsibilities needed to perform those jobs as they climbed into each vehicle for a hands-on perspective./Students were engaged in conversational topics that included personal safety, emergency response and first aid, the cost of each vehicle, and the concept of supply and demand. Students tried on equipment and were shown how to use various tools of the trade.

All the presenters left a lasting impression on the students and they offered similar advice: Select a career that fuels your passion and motivates you each day to work hard and to do something for the greater good and help people."
