BRIGANTINE Amy Kennedy of Brigantine today announced in a video that she is seeking the Democratic nomination for the Second Congressional District of New Jersey.

She is the fourth candidate to jump into the race following Congressman Jeff Van Drew's defection to the Republican Party.

Kennedy said too many government leaders have lost their moral compass.

Trump and Van Drew are symptoms of a bigger sickness infecting our country and our politics. Doing what's right shouldn't be complicated, she said.

In the video, she cited the lack of job creation in South Jersey, environmental issues affecting the coastline and the mental health and opiate addiction problem as reasons for her candidacy.

She is one of four announced candidates hoping to flip the district back to Democratic control in the 2020 General Election.

Longport resident and political science Prof. Brigid Callahan Harrison, Atlantic County Freeholder Ashley Bennett, West Cape May Commissioner John Francis, and Robert Turkavage, a longtime Brigantine Republican who recently switched to the Democrat Party, have also announced their candidacies in the Democrat primary.

One of them will face off with the winner in the Republican primary, which includes Van Drew and three other Republicans seeking the nomination - Brian Fitzherbert, Bob Patterson and David Richter.

She is a public school teacher and mother of five children. She is married to former Rep. Patrick Kennedy.
