JFS Village by the Shore announces October programming

MARGATE - Autumn is a delightful time to enjoy entertaining, informative and thought-provoking programs offered through The Lynn Kramer Village by the Shore at Jewish Family Service of Atlantic & Cape May Counties. Plan to participate with friends, family, and neighbors.

Thoughts from the Bookshelf, Tuesday, Oct. 1, 3 p.m.

Join Thoughts from the Bookshelf Facilitator Pat Goldstein and Village Community Specialist Tina Serota for a book club gathering. This month, the group will discuss the romance novel, “You Are Here by David Nicholls.” The book centers on two middle-aged protagonists who unexpectedly find themselves on a long distance walking trail through the English countryside, which becomes an unlikely impetus for a midlife romance. Village Film Society, Tuesday, Oct. 8, 10:30 a.m.

Join Village film enthusiast and historic cinematic buff Tom Celandine and Village Community Specialist Tina Serota for a discussion about the documentary, “Will & Harper.” Premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, this is an intimate story of the friendship between actor and comedian Will Farrell and his best friend of 30 years, former SNL head writer Harper Steele. They embark on a road trip to process a new stage in life and reintroduce Steele to the country she loves as her authentic self after a gender transition. The movie can be viewed on Netflix. Positivity Project Joins the Mindful Movers, Wednesday, Oct. 9, 16, 23 and 30, 9 a.m. 

Join Village Community Specialist Tina Serota as she explores mindfulness, gratitude and meditation followed by a stroll on the Ventnor boardwalk. Care for your mind, spirit and body. Program begins at the park behind the Ventnor Library S. Newport Avenue. RSVP the Monday before each walk. 

Medicare Open Enrollment Workshop, Monday, Oct. 14, 10:30 a.m.

October begins the Medicare Open Enrollment Period. This is the one time of year seniors can make a change to their prescription or supplemental/Advantage plans. Join JFS Village Community Specialist Tina Serota and JCC’s Bridget Giblin as they welcome Ellen Cosgrove from Hafetz and Associates for a presentation about options, including Medicare Part A and B, Part C Advantage plans, Part D Prescription plans and supplemental coverage. A Q&A session follows. This workshop provides an opportunity to make sure everyone is informed about their Medicare plan, benefits and the other choices available. Attend in-person at the Katz JCC Boardroom, 501 N. Jerome Ave., Margate. RSVP by Oct. 9.

Lunch Around Town, Tuesday, Oct. 15, noon to 1:30 p.m.

Enjoy a leisurely lunch with friends while supporting a local restaurant. This month, dine at Aroma, 5206 Atlantic Ave., Ventnor. Come prepared for good food and conversation. Order off the menu and pay individually (cash only). RSVP by Oct. 10.

Memoir Workshop: Zoom Only, Friday, Oct. 18, 10:30 a.m. to noon

Experience the thrill of capturing life’s adventures, history, and ancestry with the Memoir Workshop led by award-winning author and Drexel University Director of Certificate Program in Writing and Publishing Harriet Levin Millan. A laptop or pen and paper is needed for the workshop. This program is via Zoom and a link will be emailed before the workshop. RSVP by Oct. 15.

Women’s Coffee and Conversation: Advocating for Your Loved Ones, Monday, Oct. 28, 10:30 a.m. to noon

Join Village Community Specialist Tina Serota, Bratton Law Group’s Jen Hand, JCC’s Bridget Giblin, Angelic Health’s Carolyn Johnson Peterson, Alzheimer’s Association’s Mary Beth Lewis, and UMC’s Michele Musto as they host professional speakers on issues that impact a woman’s ability to live her best life. As people transition from traditional norms of private medical and societal care to large corporate options of healthcare, insurance and other systems that may affect everyday life and wellbeing, how do we advocate for ourselves and those of our loved ones? Join Bratton Law Group Director of Elder Care Coordination Ann Markel-Crozier as she leads an interactive discussion from her professional and personal experiences. Attend in-person at the Katz JCC Boardroom, 501 N. Jerome Ave., Margate. RSVP by Oct. 21.

Memory Connections, Monday, Oct. 28, 1-2:30 p.m.

Join Village Community Specialist Tina Serota, Alzheimer’s Association’s Mary Beth Lewis, Angelic Health’s Carolyn Johnson Peterson, Bratton Law Group’s Jen Hand, UMC’s Michele Musto, and JCC’s Bridget Giblin for a gathering of caregivers of loved ones with dementia and the person living with the disease. Caregivers will participate in a support group led by a trained professional while their loved one will enjoy a socialization activity. Light refreshments will be served. Attend in-person at the Katz JCC Boardroom, 501 N. Jerome Ave., Margate. RSVP by Oct. 21.

Memory Café: Ocean City, Tuesday, Oct. 29, 10:30 a.m. to noon

Caregivers and their loved ones living with dementia are invited to join Village and UMC representatives in a dementia friendly space. Experience creativity and social connections through art, music, gentle movements and more. Attend in person at the Ocean City Free Public Library, 1735 Simpson Ave., Ocean City. RSVP by Oct. 22.

Throwback Thursday, Thursday, Oct. 31, 10:30 a.m. to noon

Join Board of Jewish Education Director Josh Cutler as he presents a nostalgic trip down memory lane retracing the history of the JCC from its original location on S. Virginia Ave. in Atlantic City to Downbeach in the late 1950s to its most recent expansion in 2003. Brunch will be served. Attend in-person at the Katz JCC Boardroom, 501 N. Jerome Ave., Margate. RSVP by Oct. 28.
