Manhattan Short Film Festival to be held at Margate Library.

MARGATE After a tremendous response from the community last year, the Margate City Public Library is bringing back the Manhattan Short Film Festival for a second year.

The library is one of 65 locations across the country selected to participate in the festival's 26th year of showing short films, and one of only two locations in South Jersey to screen Oscar-qualified films selected from 850 submissions from 72 countries.

The Festival Committee has selected 10 films averaging 13 minutes long for viewers to experience at showings between Sept. 28 to Oct. 6. Viewers will see all 10 films during each of the nine screenings, with a brief intermission at the middle of each session.

The lineup of the Top 10 films selected for this year's festival, which include the common theme of facing adversity, are Sunless (USA), Voice Activated (Australia), Yellow (Afghanistan), Tuulikki (Finland), The Family Circus Boy (USA), Career Day (USA) Snail (Iran), The Record (Switzerland), The Stupid Boy: (UK), and Soleil De Nuit (Canada). The films feature narratives that are dramatic, humorous, magical, and always inspirational.

Last year, the community's response was tremendous. We've added additional showings this year, Library Director Jim Cahill said.

Screenings will be held 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28; 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29; 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30; 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2; 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3; 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4; and 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6.

At each showing, attendees will have the opportunity to become instant film critics by voting on Best Short Film and Best Actor. Ballots will be tallied, and the results announced at manhattanshort.com 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 9. For information about each of the films, including trailers, see www.manhattanshort.com.

Reservations are required to participate in the film festival, which is free for participants. To reserve a seat, call the library at 609-822-4700.
