Jersey Fresh abounds at Margate’s Thanksgiving Farmers Market

MARGATE – Seasonal Jersey Fresh produce and handcrafted food items were the theme of the day at the Fall Farmers Market at Steve & Cookies By The Bay restaurant Sunday morning and afternoon.

The market was held in the veranda and the main dining room and included gourmet mushrooms, sheep’s milk cheeses and lots of fresh baked goods. Many of the vendors were new to the market and some said they hope to be asked back for the summertime Margate Community Farmers Market held Thursday mornings from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Jane Diamond of Jane Diamond Ceramic Arts of Margate displayed her beautiful handmade pottery and each piece was unique.

“I call it functional pottery and I experiment with glazes and under-glaze transfers,” Diamond said.

She has a studio at the Ocean City Arts Center, but she may be looking for a “hole in the wall” space in the Downbeach area, if one exists.

“All I need is heat and hot water,” she said.

A friend is holding onto a kiln that she would like to buy and place in the space when it becomes available.

Diamond said she also displays and sells her pottery at Reeds Farm Market in Egg Harbor Township and will be selling at the OC Arts Center’s holiday sale being held Nov. 26 to Dec. 13.

Kitchen 19 was also new to the market. The company has a location at 19 S. 2nd Ave. in Hammonton, where they sell their martini mixes, gourmet-styled merchandise and appetizers. The store also offers space for makers to create their own foodstuffs, cooking classes and it hosts private events, specializing in Wedding Day breakfasts.

“We sell our products at Florida Cold Cuts in Ventnor,” Olivia Cashan said. “We’ve only been in business six months, and we are loving it.”

Eileen Geiger of Linwood was only there for a shore time, but already she had purchases in her shopping bag.

“We got Caesar salad dressing, and lots of cakes,” she said. “This is our first time at this market. I didn’t know what to expect and I think it’s great that it is held indoors.”

Another great vendor was Twist of Linwood, which sells pretzels and ice cream at a former 7-11 location on New Road.

On Sunday, proprietor Aaron Sykes brought pretzels made in the shape of large and small turkeys.

“We sell regular Philly pretzels, braids, our turkey assortment, and we also have stuffed pretzels,” he said. “They are stuffed with cheese steak and Buffalo chicken, all made in-house.”

Jennifer Dahme, First Lady of Ventnor City, had a bag full of tasty treats that will probably never make it to the Thanksgiving table, she said.

“We got salad dressing, twisted Rosemary bread, baked goods from All That Batters in Egg Harbor City and 7311 in Ventnor,” she said. “I doubt they will last till Thanksgiving.”
