9-year-old boy injured in Margate crash released from hospital

  • Margate

A juvenile airlifted from a Margate crash Thursday is home recovering.

The 9-year-old boy was riding an electric-powered bicycle east on Fulton Avenue toward the basketball courts at the Margate City Recreation Field Complex, just after 6 p.m. when the crash happened, police said Friday.

The driver of the motor vehicle was stopped at the light heading north on Jerome Avenue, the preliminary investigation found.

When the light turned green, the driver went into the intersection, and was struck on the side by the bicycle, with the boy ending up underneath the vehicle, police said.

The street was shut down while the child was evaluated at the scene by paramedics and Margate firefighters, when a decision was made to have him airlifted to Cooper University Hospital for evaluation.

He was released later that night and is home recovering.

The accident is being investigated by Officer Brett Grodziak and Lt. Jeanette Arcuri.

The Fire Department thanked all agencies involved, calling it "a true team effort" that included Margate City police, AtlantiCare Paramedics, the crew from SouthStar helicopter, Longport Volunteer firefighters and the Margate City dispatcher for "handling this emergency with true professionalism, keeping the calm and making all of the notifications needed."

Margate police took the chance to remind all parents that bicycle helmets are required by New Jersey State law for anyone younger than 17.
