DOWNBEACH - Although the schools are closed along with municipal operations, the Downbeach area's Public Works Department snowplows are out in force trying to keep up with clearing the roads as the first major snowstorm in years rocks the Jersey shore.
So far, several inches of snow has fallen on Atlantic City and Downbeach towns, and the gentle snowfall will continue throughout the day and into early morning hours Tuesday.
Our Johnny-on-the-spot photographer, Steve Jasiecki of Margate, was out and about today, and sent us a few of his “snowtographs.”
He said there were people walking on the beach, taking advantage of the snowy weather.
“Some of us love it,” he said before heading home to warm up with some hot soup for lunch.
According to the U.S. Weather Service Mt. Holly, the low-pressure system will move offshore by the early hours of Tuesday, Jan. 7, and be followed with a very cold and dry high-pressure system that will last throughout the week. Another storm - maybe a whopper - is predicted for the weekend.
Some areas of South Jersey got 6-10 inches, but snowfall amounts tapered off toward the north. The heaviest snow is winding down now with another 1-2 inches to fall this afternoon.
Tuesday's high-pressure system brings winds of up to 15-25 miles-per-hour, drifting snow, cold temperatures of 20s-30s, and sunny skies.
